First of all I’d like to point out that the lovely Newt was my dearest darling friend, Kit! Her blog is Kettugasm on Tumblr.
Now on to the question itself!
I used some pretty rudimentary tools. I used:
- Prismacolor markers in:
- Moss Green
- Emerald Green
- Nile Green
- Cadmium Yellow
- Brick Red
- Copic marker in:
- Several black pens, but the one I ended up using most was Uni’s Rollerball, one of these
- Sakura Gelly Roll pen in white
- Ben Nye transparent powder.
OKAY SO BASICALLY WHAT I DID was have kit lean her arm on my knee, and I sketched out the Kaiju with the grayish lavender copic marker. I’m pretty good at eyeballing things, so this might be easy for some of you, and tough for others. You could also theoretically print the image out and see if you could trace it somehow? Not sure how you’d go about doing that but as I said, I just eyeballed it.
After that I started lining the sketch on her arm, using the uni rollerball pen. Again, I’m pretty dang good at eyeballing, and I improvised a lot since the references we had to go off of were not exactly the clearest.
After it was lined, I started coloring it in with the markers. In order to do this effectively, it helps to know how markers bleed on skin, and how to color with them and shade with them in general. I don’t recommend trying doing this with crayola markers or anything, either.
After that, I did the outlines on the red/orange/yellow swirls behind the kaiju with the white gel pen and added highlights to the kaiju as well.
Finally, she went ahead and covered her forearms in the Ben Nye transparent powder to set it. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST. The ink from the markers will probably end up rubbing off at least a little bit WITH the powder, but they will definitely start rubbing and smudging immediately without it.
To keep the ink from bleeding and getting gross during the four days of the con, she wrapped her forearms in plastic and taped them up while she showered and slept.
Hope that helps!
(also here’s another pic of kit as newt:)
OH AND KELLY ADDS:
also: DO NOT USE FINAL SPRAY. it will make the ink run and u do not want that. (they wound up staying on for about a week and a half)staying on for about a week and a half)
